Twin Disc Type
Four Hydraulic Torque Converters Meeting the Needs of the Oil and Gas Industries. Developing advanced technology which provides product designs for the effective transmission of horsepower has been one of the keys to the success Twin Disc has achieved since the company was founded in 1918. Twin Disc has traditionally offered innovative products to meet the specific requirements of its customers and markets. Twin Disc is meeting the challenges of the oil and gas industries with a line of hydraulic torque converters for both diesel engines and electric motors developed specially to meet market requirements for drilling, hoisting and pumping functions. |

Three-Stage Torque Converters Twin Disc Three-Stage Hydraulic Torque Converters automatically multiply engine torque output to meet the degree of load or resistance ranging from zero to as much as five times engine torque at stall. When the load tends to slow down the converter output shaft, the hydraulic fluid in the torque converter is re-routed against the converter reactor blades adding reaction torque to the engine torque. This torque is similar to that achieved when shifting a mechanical transmission from 1:1 ratio to a lower gear. In effect, a torque converter offers and infinite range of torque ratios, similar to but smoother than the step-by-step shifting of a mechanical transmission from a 1:1 ratio to lower gears.

Three-Stage Torque Converter Applications
| Crawler Tractors: Maximum drawbar pull can be exerted at all times over the roughest operating conditions. For example, in pusher work, the operator merely has to make contact with the equipment being pushed and open the throttle. As the load increases or decreases, the varying torque required to handle the load is selected and exerted automatically by the torque converter. The hydraulic connection between the driving and driven parts smoothes out shocks and jolts, provides smooth, sustained acceleration with the engine always working in its most efficient range. |
Hoists & Winches: In winches, hoists or cranes the automatic torque adjustment provided by the torque converter permits holding the load in mid-air with the throttle alone, without "bobbing". In heavy-duty service such as logging yarders, the converter automatically increases line pull as the load causes line speed to be reduced, preventing slacking and jerking. Smooth load pick up assures a faster work cycle with no interruptions for clutches or gear changing. A freewheel for boom-lowering is optional. |
|
| Slush Pumps: The hydraulic torque converter when applied to reciprocating pumps such as oil field slush pumps permit operation through a wide range of volume versus pressure while using the maximum size liner. In addition to minimizing the impact loads on rods and bearings, the elimination of liner changes makes the pump continuously available for more operating hours. Small diameter chain sprockets replace the larger and expensive "V" bent sheaves providing a more compact unit for easier transportation. The converter permits the engine to operate in the more efficient speed range with consequent economies in fuel consumption. |
Shunting Locomotives: Diesel-electric locomotives produce a continually-varying torque to the wheels. The use of a three-stage torque converter provides a good tractive effort curve when compared to a diesel-electric set. For use on negative grades where braking may be a problem, the torque converter can be furnished with a freewheel to provide automatic downhill braking. This freewheel provides converter braking effort up to 90% engine rated horsepower plus the additional friction braking horsepower of the engine. |
|
| Excavators: Excavators and other equipment which combine operations like hoisting, swinging and crowding are good applications for three-stage torque converters. The hydraulic torque converter smoothly delivers from two to three times the effective prime mover torque for hoist and crowd loads, then automatically speeds up to the maximum desired swing speed where an output shaft governor regulates the output speed to the desired setting and thereby reduces power output to the minimum requirement. |
Conclusions: Twin Disc's complete line of Hydraulic Torque Converters can meet the requirements of diesel installations from 90 to 3500 horsepower. Three-Stage, Type Four, and other models come in a wide range of types, sizes and capacities. For more information about any Twin Disc Torque Converter line, contact Mill Log today! |
